Prodigy Prepare New Album For March Release

The Prodigy Ready New Album For March Release

11/19/2008 By Brock Thiessen, Exclaim.ca

Get ready to fire up those rave horns — the Prodigy are coming back at us with album number five. On March 2, the long-time dance outfit’s own imprint, Take Me to the Hospital, will release Invaders Must Die, an album that, according to the band, is “on fire.”

The record will be the first Prodigy studio LP since 2004’s ill-received Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned and, perhaps more importantly, will mark the first time the band’s main man Liam Howlett has worked with vocalists/dancers/fire-starters Keith Flint and Maxim since 1997’s mega-successful The Fat of the Land.

“All fucking bands say their new record’s their best, but this just feels really triumphant for us,” Howlett recently told Kerrang! “It’s on fire. It’s all about the three of us together and what we can do. You know what we deal with: it’s beats in a predominantly electronic style and it’s full of fucked-up guitars!”

Besides Flint and Maxim back onboard, Howlett also has enlisted a little extra rhythmic firepower by way of Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, who got behind the kit for the new album track “Run with the Wolves.”

“Dave emailed us to see what we were up to and offered his services,” Howlett said. “It was really inspiring. It’s definitely the most venomous track on the album. Keith really goes for it on lead vocals. It’s wicked.”

While there’s no word if and when Invaders Must Die could hit North America (the release date appears to be UK-only right now), the Prodigy have lined up several winter tour dates in the UK.

TCR to Celebrate 15 Years in the Business!

Without Rennie Pilgrem's TCR there would be no Nu Skool Breaks, no Friction with Adam Freeland & Tayo, no HUM with Meat Katie, no Breaksday at The Glade Festival, no Stir. With over 400 titles from some of the best electronic producers we thought we'd celebrate with a series of free TCR mixes from Rennie, various classics remixed and parties around the globe.

To celebrate the fact that we are 15 years old some of our most important tracks are being remixed and re-released alongside the originals. ‘Morpheus' by Koma & Bones. ‘Black Widow' by Rennie Pilgrem & Uberzone. ‘Purple Monkey' by JDS and more will be unleashed over the rest of the year. This is great timing as breaks are currently gracing some of the biggest club releases of the moment, with crowds loving the fusion of 4/4 and breaks... bring it on!

We will also be throwing a series of parties around the globe which will include TCR Artists. Following on from massive sales (in excess of 20 000) of his album ‘Skin' via the unique texting service Rennie Pilgrem has done the first in a series of TCR Monster Mixes which will be given to party-goers as a special memento of the label. The link to download the mix for FREE is www.trackitdown.net/tcr

In case some of you aren't too familiar with the label TCR we thought we'd ask a few of our friends including Paul Oakenfold, Plump DJ's to tell us what TCR means to them...

Paul Oakenfold
"Rennie Pilgrem is one of the original pioneers of the Break Beat movement, within his unique individual signature sound and production, he stands out as the true contemporary innovator of Break Beat music today."

Laurent Garnier
"TCR nearly 15 years already? i never realised that it's been 15 years that the label have never left my record boxes. Thanks for all these great musical moments you've given to me and the people on the floor !!!"

Annie Nightingale (BBC Radio 1)
"I used to wonder what went on at the Thursday Club. Clearly they played the best music in the world there, and attracted the best DJs. TCR ---Thursday Club Recordings is now a byword in the breaks community. You know you're getting the approval stamp of Rennie Pilgrem, and some earth-shatteringly great music. Rennie, as breaks meister has kept up an incredible level of production and music throughout the life -time of the label. Now its reached the age of being a mid-teenager. Bring it on! More, more and more please!"

FreQ Nasty
"TCR helped shape the sound of late 90's and 2000's dance music full stop. They were there from the start delivering classic slices of breakbeat history and showed the world what was going on in the underbelly of the London underground rave scene. Congratulations TCR and many thanks for all the great tunes!"

Lee Burridge
"Congratulations to a fifteen year old label. That make TCR almost legal! Or is it barely legal breaks? Nice one Rennie".

Plump DJ's
"TCR was one of the first labels that inspired us to get of our large asses to make and play Breakbeat. Rennie and Pippa's uncompromising attitude and rare talent keeps them at the top of their game in this exciting but testy time for Dance music. Long live TCR."

Barry Ashworth (Dub Pistols)
"TCR have always been at the cutting edge of electronica, Rennie Pilgrem always seems to raise the bar above everyone then he goes and raises it again, a legend and a trailblazer that others can only wish to follow!"

Hernan Cattaneo
"Congratulations to TCR for 15 years of quality music"

Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM)
"Like John Peel's radio show was an extension of the man himself, TCR is an extension of Rennie Pilgrem, gentleman, ambassador, and prince among men."

The Crystal Method
"TCR has undoubtedly been the label that has consistently delivered forward thinking music to a crowd hungry for quality breaks and cutting edge music. Wow, 15 Years! Congratulations!"

Adam Freeland
"With Tunes like 'A place called Acid'. TCR were responsible for some of the founding moments of the scene"

Uberzone
"In the realm of electronic dance music, very few labels carry the prominence and weight of TCR. I feel privileged to have released tracks on TCR and worked with Rennie"

Jay Cunning (Kiss FM)
"TCR was one of the leading labels when I got into breakbeat back in late 90's and they are still a leading force to this day"

DJ Icey
"Thursday Club Recordings tunes have been a staple in my sets since Rennie launched the label, you can tell this is a labor of love."

Elite Force
"TCR are one of the true breakbeat warriors - tastemakers since a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth and with a back catalogue of classics to make the most militant of heads drool like the slavvering dogs they are. If only their leader could play table tennis ...."

Justin Rushmore (Soul Of Man/Fingerlickin)
"Innovators and instigators of the breakbeat explosion, Thursday Club Recordings have a lot to answer for."

D-Monic
"At one point I think I had all the TCR releases. TCR was a 'buy on sight' label for me. The TCR10 double pack stayed in my crates for ages. Black Widow was an anthem for me, too. 15 years?!? wow... Congrats!"

TCR History
Thursday Club Recordings was founded in 1993 by Rennie Pilgrem out of the ashes of the UK Rave scene. After 3 very successful years as part of Rhythm Section (Comin' On Strong) Rennie wanted to release music at a more sensible tempo than Rave which hadn't quite mutated into Drum N Bass.

Today TCR has the largest Back Catelogue of breaks-based music on the planet. Rennie has picked up an arm-full of accolades along the way, for ‘Most Important Person in Breaks', ‘Best Remix', ‘Best Single' but more importantly TCR has worked with some of the most important electronic artists in the World.

Arthur Baker, Uberzone, Koma & Bones, Blim, General Midi, JDS, Chris Carter, Tayo, Elite Force, Ellis Dee, Meat Katie, Breakneck, Dopamine, Diverted, Autobots, the list goes on.

TCR has constantly pushed boundaries and taken chances. It's offshoot ‘Sosumi' started the ‘cheeky' bootleg phase with its re-rub of Human League's ‘Love Action'... that got people like Damian Lazarus hot under the collar. Another off-shoot ‘Unreal' spawned the genre ‘Breakstep' which fused filthy bass with Garage (and now sounds very relevant again)

Radio stations like BBC Radio 1, Galaxy & Sirius have devoted whole shows to the label, mags & newspapers like Metro & iDJ have written pages on TCR and clubs including Fabric & Bedrock have hosted TCR parties.

TCR has also kickstarted some of most vital club nights in the land:

- Friction, which with the help of Adam Freeland, Tayo and Ian Williams gave Birth to NuSkool Breakz and attracted djs such a Carl Cox, Andy Weatherall and Paul Daley

- HUM which showed how breaks and house could not only co-exist but grow as a free party to nearly 2,000 at Canvas in King's X

-Stirwhich as a spin-off from the Glade Festival took over Heaven and filled the place with Psytrance, Breaks, Minimal and all sorts in-between.

- Breaksday which went to the Miami Winter Music Conference and had the party of the Conference as well as every year at Glade Festival.

TC - Where's My Money (D-Monic Transition Edit)

So... this is no big deal, really...

A couple weeks ago I played a great little mixed genre party and I followed one of Toronto's best
D&B DJ's, DJ Spinz!  A lot of DJ's are afraid to play mixed genre parties, and more are afraid to follow D&B DJ's as they think the tempo change is too drastic.  So I fixed that.

Here's a very quick edit I did to use as a quick tool to get the tempo down while keeping the energy hi
gh.  I combined the original of TC's hit "Where's My Money" with the huge Caspa remix.  The response was huge!

This is far from a musical remix masterpiece...  it's just a simple DJ tool...

New Release: I.D. - "Akusative / Flay"

Artist: I.D
Track 1: ‘Akusative’
Track 2: ‘Flay’
Label: Cool & Deadly
Cat No: CAD006

I.D. is Ed Bayling, who lives in Prague but is a native of Manchester, where he met long time friend and partner in crime Baobinga. Together they have released a slew of cutting edge tunes culminating in their BIG MONSTER project for FAT! Records.  More recently they have handed in heavy remixes for Stanton Warriors and Meat Katie’s Lot 49 label amongst others.

On a solo tip, an I.D release has always meant an amalgamation of garage bass, proper breakbeats and endless energy – a recent remix for Reso and a forthcoming release for Re:Connect records with “Mission” will be further proof.

AKUSATIVE’ is killer breakstep business, for fans of Loefah, Oris Jay, Toasty Boy, Reso and all. ‘FLAY’ rolls Dubstep, Breakbeat and Techno into a ball and skanks across the dancefloor. Both tracks have been tried and tested by label co-boss TAYO, as well as CASPA and FREQ NASTY, to devastating effect.

AKUSATIVE’ / ‘FLAY’ follows on from Bassbin Twins, TRG, TAYO, and BLACK CANVAS as the sixth release from the nascent COOL & DEADLY label, an imprint whose aim is to inhabit the space between Dubstep, Garage and Breakbeats. Where the backbone is dub and the body is bass. More singles from Tayo, TRG, Bassbin Twins, an album from Black Canvas and a VERY exciting project from a high profile drum and baser to come over the next few months.

D-Monic's Pick:

I.D. - Akusative

"Always loved the breakstep sound, and this tunes is a dark breaks-dubstep transition tune that works well.  Cool & Deadly is becoming one of my favorite labels."

New Release: Jagged Slap - "10 Pence Short"

Artist : Jagged Slap
Track 1 : ‘10 Pence Short’
Track 2 : ‘10 Pence Short’ Wrongstar Society RMX
Label : Electric Tastebuds

Release Date : Nov 17th, 2008

Label boss Leeroy Thornhill (from the band that need no introduction, The Prodigy) has again joined forces this time with Joe Morena who has remixed for the likes of Alabama 3, Simply Red, Human League & Sunscreem to name but a few.

They have created an electro, breaks sound with their latest release as 'Jagged Slap', with the bad boys of bass the Wrongstars on remixing duties.

Watch your bass bins!

D-Monic's Pick:

‘10 Pence Short’ Wrongstar Society Remix

"Nice proper breaks feel on this remix with some cool catchy stabs and vocal effects and a KILLER bassline!  This gets the crowds attention everytime!"

New Release: Maelstrom - "The Beat Police"

ARTIST: Maelstrom
1 - The Beat Police  feat Mc Youthstar (Original Mix)
2 - The Beat Police feat Mc Youthstar (Is This House Mix)
3 - The Beat Police feat Mc Youthstar (Redux Mix)
LABEL: Katorza

Release Date: Nov 3rd 2008

The second release from new label ‘Katorza’ bought to you by label heads Maelstrom & Redux who’s label mantra is similar to that of their own releases, to deliver top notch music, be it taking in the styles of breaks, electro, techno and all with a serious dollop of funk to get the party going.

Maelstrom has had releases on Jalapeno Records, Rotax, Labrok, Menu Music and West Records. Maelstrom has quite simply exploded onto the scene in the past two and half years, drawing the support of artists across the globe, including the likes of Krafty Kuts, Aquasky, Lady Waks, Cut La Roc, the Utah Saints, Ellis Dee, Rennie Pilgrem, NAPT, SOTO, Laurent Garnier and the Plump DJs!

MC Youthstar has already peformed on line ups with artists such as Andy C, Roni Size, Grooverider, Pendulum, Fresh, J Majik, Friction, Hype, Bailey or High Contrast. He's currently in production with Youthman aka Audio Unit, DirtyPhonics, Elisa Do Brasil And United Fools, and with other Mc’s like Jamalski, Big Red, Taiwan, and A’mn

- (Original) Comin’ right at ya like a stampeding audio onslaught of some considerable magnitude on this bassline-lead  breaks excursion with its incessant and infectious rising bassline cranking up the energy all the way to 11 on this straight-up bass, beats and vocals journey that keeps switching the bass rhythm without confusin’ yo ass! Rather, yo ass will be on fire, I’m tellin you now, muthaf****!

- (Is this House mix) This goes all over the place at the beginning – straddling stripped down minimal, glitch hop, urban funk and crunk before settling on a pounding hip-tech-bass-hop-electro-house-breaks smash up of epic proportions. Get down and bounce to this!

- (Redux) this alternative is more stripped back and linear in its approach, but no less deadly on the dancefloor! The driving bass and minimal beats are expertly interrupted by some evocative bouncy-pipe bass action, serious synth shenanigans and a young man displaying a propensity for rhythmical rhyming with an injection of jump up urban attitude – it’s quite the thing, I hear

D-Monic's Choice:

The Beat Police (feat Mc Youthstar) (Original Mix)

"Have played this in every set since I got it. It's a GREAT transition tune or a floor filler! The other mixes are great too!"
