Prodigy Prepare New Album For March Release

The Prodigy Ready New Album For March Release

11/19/2008 By Brock Thiessen, Exclaim.ca

Get ready to fire up those rave horns — the Prodigy are coming back at us with album number five. On March 2, the long-time dance outfit’s own imprint, Take Me to the Hospital, will release Invaders Must Die, an album that, according to the band, is “on fire.”

The record will be the first Prodigy studio LP since 2004’s ill-received Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned and, perhaps more importantly, will mark the first time the band’s main man Liam Howlett has worked with vocalists/dancers/fire-starters Keith Flint and Maxim since 1997’s mega-successful The Fat of the Land.

“All fucking bands say their new record’s their best, but this just feels really triumphant for us,” Howlett recently told Kerrang! “It’s on fire. It’s all about the three of us together and what we can do. You know what we deal with: it’s beats in a predominantly electronic style and it’s full of fucked-up guitars!”

Besides Flint and Maxim back onboard, Howlett also has enlisted a little extra rhythmic firepower by way of Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, who got behind the kit for the new album track “Run with the Wolves.”

“Dave emailed us to see what we were up to and offered his services,” Howlett said. “It was really inspiring. It’s definitely the most venomous track on the album. Keith really goes for it on lead vocals. It’s wicked.”

While there’s no word if and when Invaders Must Die could hit North America (the release date appears to be UK-only right now), the Prodigy have lined up several winter tour dates in the UK.

TCR to Celebrate 15 Years in the Business!

Without Rennie Pilgrem's TCR there would be no Nu Skool Breaks, no Friction with Adam Freeland & Tayo, no HUM with Meat Katie, no Breaksday at The Glade Festival, no Stir. With over 400 titles from some of the best electronic producers we thought we'd celebrate with a series of free TCR mixes from Rennie, various classics remixed and parties around the globe.

To celebrate the fact that we are 15 years old some of our most important tracks are being remixed and re-released alongside the originals. ‘Morpheus' by Koma & Bones. ‘Black Widow' by Rennie Pilgrem & Uberzone. ‘Purple Monkey' by JDS and more will be unleashed over the rest of the year. This is great timing as breaks are currently gracing some of the biggest club releases of the moment, with crowds loving the fusion of 4/4 and breaks... bring it on!

We will also be throwing a series of parties around the globe which will include TCR Artists. Following on from massive sales (in excess of 20 000) of his album ‘Skin' via the unique texting service Rennie Pilgrem has done the first in a series of TCR Monster Mixes which will be given to party-goers as a special memento of the label. The link to download the mix for FREE is www.trackitdown.net/tcr

In case some of you aren't too familiar with the label TCR we thought we'd ask a few of our friends including Paul Oakenfold, Plump DJ's to tell us what TCR means to them...

Paul Oakenfold
"Rennie Pilgrem is one of the original pioneers of the Break Beat movement, within his unique individual signature sound and production, he stands out as the true contemporary innovator of Break Beat music today."

Laurent Garnier
"TCR nearly 15 years already? i never realised that it's been 15 years that the label have never left my record boxes. Thanks for all these great musical moments you've given to me and the people on the floor !!!"

Annie Nightingale (BBC Radio 1)
"I used to wonder what went on at the Thursday Club. Clearly they played the best music in the world there, and attracted the best DJs. TCR ---Thursday Club Recordings is now a byword in the breaks community. You know you're getting the approval stamp of Rennie Pilgrem, and some earth-shatteringly great music. Rennie, as breaks meister has kept up an incredible level of production and music throughout the life -time of the label. Now its reached the age of being a mid-teenager. Bring it on! More, more and more please!"

FreQ Nasty
"TCR helped shape the sound of late 90's and 2000's dance music full stop. They were there from the start delivering classic slices of breakbeat history and showed the world what was going on in the underbelly of the London underground rave scene. Congratulations TCR and many thanks for all the great tunes!"

Lee Burridge
"Congratulations to a fifteen year old label. That make TCR almost legal! Or is it barely legal breaks? Nice one Rennie".

Plump DJ's
"TCR was one of the first labels that inspired us to get of our large asses to make and play Breakbeat. Rennie and Pippa's uncompromising attitude and rare talent keeps them at the top of their game in this exciting but testy time for Dance music. Long live TCR."

Barry Ashworth (Dub Pistols)
"TCR have always been at the cutting edge of electronica, Rennie Pilgrem always seems to raise the bar above everyone then he goes and raises it again, a legend and a trailblazer that others can only wish to follow!"

Hernan Cattaneo
"Congratulations to TCR for 15 years of quality music"

Eddy Temple-Morris (XFM)
"Like John Peel's radio show was an extension of the man himself, TCR is an extension of Rennie Pilgrem, gentleman, ambassador, and prince among men."

The Crystal Method
"TCR has undoubtedly been the label that has consistently delivered forward thinking music to a crowd hungry for quality breaks and cutting edge music. Wow, 15 Years! Congratulations!"

Adam Freeland
"With Tunes like 'A place called Acid'. TCR were responsible for some of the founding moments of the scene"

Uberzone
"In the realm of electronic dance music, very few labels carry the prominence and weight of TCR. I feel privileged to have released tracks on TCR and worked with Rennie"

Jay Cunning (Kiss FM)
"TCR was one of the leading labels when I got into breakbeat back in late 90's and they are still a leading force to this day"

DJ Icey
"Thursday Club Recordings tunes have been a staple in my sets since Rennie launched the label, you can tell this is a labor of love."

Elite Force
"TCR are one of the true breakbeat warriors - tastemakers since a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth and with a back catalogue of classics to make the most militant of heads drool like the slavvering dogs they are. If only their leader could play table tennis ...."

Justin Rushmore (Soul Of Man/Fingerlickin)
"Innovators and instigators of the breakbeat explosion, Thursday Club Recordings have a lot to answer for."

D-Monic
"At one point I think I had all the TCR releases. TCR was a 'buy on sight' label for me. The TCR10 double pack stayed in my crates for ages. Black Widow was an anthem for me, too. 15 years?!? wow... Congrats!"

TCR History
Thursday Club Recordings was founded in 1993 by Rennie Pilgrem out of the ashes of the UK Rave scene. After 3 very successful years as part of Rhythm Section (Comin' On Strong) Rennie wanted to release music at a more sensible tempo than Rave which hadn't quite mutated into Drum N Bass.

Today TCR has the largest Back Catelogue of breaks-based music on the planet. Rennie has picked up an arm-full of accolades along the way, for ‘Most Important Person in Breaks', ‘Best Remix', ‘Best Single' but more importantly TCR has worked with some of the most important electronic artists in the World.

Arthur Baker, Uberzone, Koma & Bones, Blim, General Midi, JDS, Chris Carter, Tayo, Elite Force, Ellis Dee, Meat Katie, Breakneck, Dopamine, Diverted, Autobots, the list goes on.

TCR has constantly pushed boundaries and taken chances. It's offshoot ‘Sosumi' started the ‘cheeky' bootleg phase with its re-rub of Human League's ‘Love Action'... that got people like Damian Lazarus hot under the collar. Another off-shoot ‘Unreal' spawned the genre ‘Breakstep' which fused filthy bass with Garage (and now sounds very relevant again)

Radio stations like BBC Radio 1, Galaxy & Sirius have devoted whole shows to the label, mags & newspapers like Metro & iDJ have written pages on TCR and clubs including Fabric & Bedrock have hosted TCR parties.

TCR has also kickstarted some of most vital club nights in the land:

- Friction, which with the help of Adam Freeland, Tayo and Ian Williams gave Birth to NuSkool Breakz and attracted djs such a Carl Cox, Andy Weatherall and Paul Daley

- HUM which showed how breaks and house could not only co-exist but grow as a free party to nearly 2,000 at Canvas in King's X

-Stirwhich as a spin-off from the Glade Festival took over Heaven and filled the place with Psytrance, Breaks, Minimal and all sorts in-between.

- Breaksday which went to the Miami Winter Music Conference and had the party of the Conference as well as every year at Glade Festival.

TC - Where's My Money (D-Monic Transition Edit)

So... this is no big deal, really...

A couple weeks ago I played a great little mixed genre party and I followed one of Toronto's best
D&B DJ's, DJ Spinz!  A lot of DJ's are afraid to play mixed genre parties, and more are afraid to follow D&B DJ's as they think the tempo change is too drastic.  So I fixed that.

Here's a very quick edit I did to use as a quick tool to get the tempo down while keeping the energy hi
gh.  I combined the original of TC's hit "Where's My Money" with the huge Caspa remix.  The response was huge!

This is far from a musical remix masterpiece...  it's just a simple DJ tool...

Werd.

New Release: I.D. - "Akusative / Flay"

Artist: I.D
Track 1: ‘Akusative’
Track 2: ‘Flay’
Label: Cool & Deadly
Cat No: CAD006

I.D. is Ed Bayling, who lives in Prague but is a native of Manchester, where he met long time friend and partner in crime Baobinga. Together they have released a slew of cutting edge tunes culminating in their BIG MONSTER project for FAT! Records.  More recently they have handed in heavy remixes for Stanton Warriors and Meat Katie’s Lot 49 label amongst others.

On a solo tip, an I.D release has always meant an amalgamation of garage bass, proper breakbeats and endless energy – a recent remix for Reso and a forthcoming release for Re:Connect records with “Mission” will be further proof.

AKUSATIVE’ is killer breakstep business, for fans of Loefah, Oris Jay, Toasty Boy, Reso and all. ‘FLAY’ rolls Dubstep, Breakbeat and Techno into a ball and skanks across the dancefloor. Both tracks have been tried and tested by label co-boss TAYO, as well as CASPA and FREQ NASTY, to devastating effect.

AKUSATIVE’ / ‘FLAY’ follows on from Bassbin Twins, TRG, TAYO, and BLACK CANVAS as the sixth release from the nascent COOL & DEADLY label, an imprint whose aim is to inhabit the space between Dubstep, Garage and Breakbeats. Where the backbone is dub and the body is bass. More singles from Tayo, TRG, Bassbin Twins, an album from Black Canvas and a VERY exciting project from a high profile drum and baser to come over the next few months.

D-Monic's Pick:

I.D. - Akusative

"Always loved the breakstep sound, and this tunes is a dark breaks-dubstep transition tune that works well.  Cool & Deadly is becoming one of my favorite labels."

New Release: Jagged Slap - "10 Pence Short"

Artist : Jagged Slap
Track 1 : ‘10 Pence Short’
Track 2 : ‘10 Pence Short’ Wrongstar Society RMX
Label : Electric Tastebuds

Release Date : Nov 17th, 2008

Label boss Leeroy Thornhill (from the band that need no introduction, The Prodigy) has again joined forces this time with Joe Morena who has remixed for the likes of Alabama 3, Simply Red, Human League & Sunscreem to name but a few.

They have created an electro, breaks sound with their latest release as 'Jagged Slap', with the bad boys of bass the Wrongstars on remixing duties.

Watch your bass bins!

D-Monic's Pick:

‘10 Pence Short’ Wrongstar Society Remix

"Nice proper breaks feel on this remix with some cool catchy stabs and vocal effects and a KILLER bassline!  This gets the crowds attention everytime!"

New Release: Maelstrom - "The Beat Police"

ARTIST: Maelstrom
1 - The Beat Police  feat Mc Youthstar (Original Mix)
2 - The Beat Police feat Mc Youthstar (Is This House Mix)
3 - The Beat Police feat Mc Youthstar (Redux Mix)
LABEL: Katorza

Release Date: Nov 3rd 2008

The second release from new label ‘Katorza’ bought to you by label heads Maelstrom & Redux who’s label mantra is similar to that of their own releases, to deliver top notch music, be it taking in the styles of breaks, electro, techno and all with a serious dollop of funk to get the party going.

Maelstrom has had releases on Jalapeno Records, Rotax, Labrok, Menu Music and West Records. Maelstrom has quite simply exploded onto the scene in the past two and half years, drawing the support of artists across the globe, including the likes of Krafty Kuts, Aquasky, Lady Waks, Cut La Roc, the Utah Saints, Ellis Dee, Rennie Pilgrem, NAPT, SOTO, Laurent Garnier and the Plump DJs!

MC Youthstar has already peformed on line ups with artists such as Andy C, Roni Size, Grooverider, Pendulum, Fresh, J Majik, Friction, Hype, Bailey or High Contrast. He's currently in production with Youthman aka Audio Unit, DirtyPhonics, Elisa Do Brasil And United Fools, and with other Mc’s like Jamalski, Big Red, Taiwan, and A’mn

- (Original) Comin’ right at ya like a stampeding audio onslaught of some considerable magnitude on this bassline-lead  breaks excursion with its incessant and infectious rising bassline cranking up the energy all the way to 11 on this straight-up bass, beats and vocals journey that keeps switching the bass rhythm without confusin’ yo ass! Rather, yo ass will be on fire, I’m tellin you now, muthaf****!

- (Is this House mix) This goes all over the place at the beginning – straddling stripped down minimal, glitch hop, urban funk and crunk before settling on a pounding hip-tech-bass-hop-electro-house-breaks smash up of epic proportions. Get down and bounce to this!

- (Redux) this alternative is more stripped back and linear in its approach, but no less deadly on the dancefloor! The driving bass and minimal beats are expertly interrupted by some evocative bouncy-pipe bass action, serious synth shenanigans and a young man displaying a propensity for rhythmical rhyming with an injection of jump up urban attitude – it’s quite the thing, I hear

D-Monic's Choice:

The Beat Police (feat Mc Youthstar) (Original Mix)

"Have played this in every set since I got it. It's a GREAT transition tune or a floor filler! The other mixes are great too!"

Deadmau5 Says DJ's Are "All Fucking Cunts"

Taken from an Irish Newspaper:
Red hot Canadian producer deadmau5 hits Irish shores this weekend but local DJ's better keep out of his way.

the five times Beatport award winner told Clubmix in an explosive interview that he HATES DJ's and think they're all fucking cunts.

deadmau5, pronounced 'dead mouse'. said he will only perform live shows of his own music and think DJ's should be extinct. he says, "it puts me to fucking sleep to be quite honest, i don't really see the technical merit in playing two songs at the same speed together and it bores me to fucking tears and hopefully, with all due respect to the DJ type that will fucking go the way of the dinosaur, id like them to disafuckingpear"

Joel continued, "its so middle man, they're like fucking lawyers you need them, but they're fucking cunts. god bless them, they're my number one customer right so I'm not gonna go diss every fucking dj, but to say you've become this massive up on a podium performer by playing other peoples productions at the same speed as someone else productions and fading between the two of them, I don't get it."

DJ AM & Travis Barker Critically Injured In Plane Crash

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - Hours after performing for thousands of South Carolina college students, former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and celebrity DJ AM were critically injured in a fiery Learjet crash that killed four people, authorities said Saturday.

Officials said the plane carrying six people was departing shortly before midnight Friday when air traffic controllers reporting seeing sparks. The plane hurtled off the end of a runway and crashed through antennas and a fence. It came to rest on an embankment across a five-lane highway and was engulfed in flames, said Debbie Hersman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Barker and DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, were in critical condition at a burn center in Augusta, Ga., about 75 miles southwest of Columbia, hospital spokeswoman Beth Frits said.

Two other passengers — Chris Baker, 29, of Studio City, Calif., and Charles Still, 25, of Los Angeles — died, as did pilot Sarah Lemmon, 31, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and co-pilot James Bland, 52, of Carlsbad, according to the county coroner. Baker was an assistant to Barker and Still was a security guard for the musician.

The plane was headed for Van Nuys, Calif. It is owned by Global Exec Aviation, a California-based charter company, and was certified to operate last year, Hersman said. The company said it had no immediate comment.

At the crash site Saturday, the air was still heavy with the odor of jet fuel. A trail of black soot led off a runway. The nose of the aircraft was gone and the roof was missing from two-thirds of the charred plane.

"It's absolutely terrible and tragic," Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

Barker and Goldstein had performed together under the name TRVSDJ-AM at a free concert in Columbia on Friday night. Event sponsor T-Mobile said their hour-long set ended at about 7:15 p.m.

The show, which included performances by former Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell and singer Gavin DeGraw, drew 10,000 people into the streets of Five Points, the neighborhood near the University of South Carolina, Coble said.

Peter Kastis, Farrell's manager, said he and Farrell didn't find out about the crash until they arrived at the airport Saturday morning to find it closed.

"I just hugged them hello less than 24 hours ago. I wish I could hug them now," Kastis said.

One concertgoer said TRVSDJ-AM's performance was unique and different.

"It was literally one of the best shows I've ever seen," said Brett Flashnick, a freelance photographer who works for The Associated Press and attended the concert for a local newspaper.

Barker, 32, was one of the more colorful members of the multiplatinum-selling punk rock band Blink-182, whose biggest album was 1999's CD "Enema of the State," which sold more than five million copies in the United States alone.

After Blink-182 disbanded in 2005, Barker went on to form the rock band (+44) — pronounced "plus forty-four." He also starred in the MTV reality series "Meet the Barkers" with former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, to whom he was married at the time. The show documented the former couple's lavish wedding and life. Their later split, reconciliation and subsequent break up made them tabloid favorites.

Goldstein is a popular DJ for hire who at one time was engaged to Nicole Richie.

He spun a mix of hip-hop and dance beats for the hottest nightclubs and had a string of dates set up for the next few weeks. He reached the peak of his celebrity perhaps during his highly publicized romance with Richie a few years ago.

DJ AM also dated singer/actress Mandy Moore, and while he became a gossip favorite for his romances, he drew respect from music aficionados for his DJ skills.

Barker and Goldstein performed as part of the house band at the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this month.

New Release: Lady Waks & Hardy Hard feat Afrika Bambaataa “Shake It”

MENU MUSIC presents...
Lady Waks & Hardy Hard feat Afrika Bambaataa “Shake It”
+ Atomic Hooligan Remix
+ Rico Tubbs Bonus Beats Mix (Digital only)
Menu012 - 12” & Digital release

RELEASE DATE: SEPT 22nd 2008

Menu’s latest offering is nothing short of an international sparing match of epic proportions. On the A side, you have the dynamic, hit making pairing of Lady Waks (Russia) & Hardy Hard (Germany) alongside the man credited with inventing Hip Hop Afrika Bambaataa (USA). Then on the flip you have a remix from Menu Music co-boss men and globetrotting fly boys Atomic Hooligan (UK). Then as a special gift for all you beat hungry heads, there is a bonus beat Baltimore work out from Rico Tubbs (Finland). Would you expect any less from Menu.... at this point in the game, you would be foolish too.

“Shake It” has been doing the business for about 6 months now. Tried and tested by the best to great results across the world. Think Breakbeat, Hip Hop, Miami Bass and Techno Grooves squished together in a shot glass, set on fire then swallowed back by a crowd of 5000 punters in St. Petersburg, and you have something that comes close to the energy of this track.

Then flip it over for a classic Hooligan - half breaks half house punching bag session. Then for you digital heads, we have a Rico Tubbs short but sweet bonus beats for you. In typical Rico style this is straight up bang, boom beats and samples. Do not miss out.

DJ Support
Atomic Hooligan, Jay Cunning, Deekline, Stanton Warriors, Rennie Pilgrim, Rico Tubbs, Lady Waks, Drammatic Twins, Boogie Army, Westbam, Freestylers.
General Midi “All 3 mixes are KILLER!”
Utah Saints “Will hammer this one in the sets”

About Lady Waks & Hardy Hard
Bottom line, if you don’t know Lady Waks by now, its defiantly time you start, ummmmm, knowing.

She is basically single handily turned Russia into a safe haven for breaks. With her In Beat We Trust and Breaks Arena events all over Russia, she has become a nationwide superstar, which soon to be repeated in the rest of Europe & the world. Their debut release on Menu last year “Minimal” was released to massive acclaim and is still selling 1 year on.

Hardy Hard is a German Techno legend who has remixed everyone from Yello to Moby. He has been knocking around on the scene since 1992 when he released his first 12” “Noise is the Message” under the name Headsequencer. Recently he is to be found support WestBam on his Electric Kingdom tour and of course making breaks with the little Lady Waks.

The Future Of DJ-ing

The pride of Canada, Richie Hawtin, has always been at the forefront of music/DJ technology.  He was part of the development team and the figurehead of Final Scratch (bonus points for anyone that remembers the original OS that Final Scratch was designed for), and now he's championing a new technology.

I remember not so long ago how fierce the vinyl vs. cd battle was... then maybe a year ago how heated the vinyl/CD vs Serato got...  then how people looked down on Ableton performances, referring to those performances as '1 hour of checking your e-mail'...

Some interesting points here...  and the bottom line here is, if you don't embrace the future, you'll be stuck in the past.

BASEMENT JAXX - Twerk

You know when you haven't heard from an artist in a long time... thats usually a sign that they're working on something big.  Then, you almost forgot about that artist... then BAM!  They're back!

Basement Jaxx are responsible for some of EDM's biggest anthems.  If I ever want to wake a crowd up, I'll sample in 'Fly Life'.  And who doesn't know the words to 'Where's Your Head At'?

The boys are back!  And, as the brilliant artists that they are, they're new sound is very current while still keeping very Jaxx-esque.  This one will rock the dancefloor...  it'll grow on you.  :)

Clubbing Goes Green

A club named WATT recently opened in the Netherlands which looks to make clubbing a green experience.  The Netherlands, which experiences a great deal of tourism due to its lax legal restrictions and congenial atmosphere, is known for its outstanding night life.

The new club employs a variety of measures to cut energy use and carbon emissions by 30 percent and water use by 50 percent compared to similar clubs.  In order to accomplish the savings and
stick to its green theme, the club employs a broad variety of measures.

Among the most attractive elements is the dance floor which generates power when danced upon.  Typically a club uses a lot of electricity in lighting the dance floor.  WATT's dancers power the club's disco lights with their dance moves, and the more power they generate the wilder the light show gets.  A prominent power meter helps to whip patrons into a dancing frenzy.

Daan Roosegaarde, who was involved in its design describes, "When you start dancing, you generate electricity, and it makes the floor come alive. The more you dance, the more the floor comes to life."

The club also collects rainwater, which it uses to refill toilets.  The club's bathrooms are outfitted with special transparent pipes to allow patrons to watch the water running down to fill the toilet.  They call this feature the "pee experience".

Drinks at the club are served in special recyclable plastic cups.  Drinks are mixed and then stored in tanks in the basement, cooled by a central air cooling system that reduces energy use.  The club offers a variety of dishes at its cafe, most of which are organic and locally grown.

Michel Smit of Sustainable DanceClub (SDC) consultants, who helped develop the concept describes, "We want to show that sustainability can be integrated into lifestyles, and integrating it into something fun shows that sustainability can be fun."

Mr. Smit and SDC are planning to bring their design to the U.S. in the near future.  He states, "We are not just focusing on Holland, we want to make as many clubs as possible sustainable, worldwide."

There Is Hope For The Future!

Cure for deafness now within reach
Deaf people could one day have their hearing restored through a groundbreaking gene therapy technique, a new study suggests. By Roger Highfield.

Deaf people could one day have their hearing restored through a groundbreaking gene therapy technique, a new study suggests. By Roger Highfield.

The transfer of a specific gene is shown today by a milestone experiment to trigger the growth of new hair cells in the inner ear - the usually irreplaceable sensory cells that pick up sound vibrations and that are lost as a result of ageing, disease, certain drugs, and by excessive exposure to loud sound.

The approach, which one day could help millions of people worldwide with deafness and inner-ear disease, is made possible by a technique that is demonstrated in the journal Nature by an American team lead by Dr John Brigande of the Oregon Hearing Research Centre, Portland, who himself is profoundly hard of hearing.

Dr Mark Downs, Director of Science at The Royal National Institute for Deaf People, RNID says: "This is an exciting development which completes another important piece of the jig-saw in understanding how we might use gene therapy to eventually restore hearing loss."

However, he would not be drawn on when the first trials could start in patients.

"Together with the very positive early signs from other potential treatments, such as stem cell therapies, it is no longer just a pipe-dream to talk about cell and drug based solutions to restore hearing. There is a long way to go, but the journey towards new treatments is certainly under way."

Named for the hair-like projections on their surfaces, hair cells form a ribbon of vibration sensors along the length of the cochlea, the organ of the inner ear that detects sound.

Receiving vibrations through the eardrum and bones of the middle ear, hair cells convert them to electrical signals carried to the brain.

People, like all mammals, are not able to regenerate hair cells when they are damaged or lost. Dr Brigande and colleagues show in Nature that by implanting a gene that regulates hair cell growth, Atoh1, into the mouse inner ear while the mouse is still in the womb, new hair cells are made.

Dr Anthony Ricci, a collaborator at Stanford University, showed that the newly formed hair cells function as well as normal hair cells.

As for human tests, Dr Brigande says that the work is at too early a stage to say when they can start: "There is no present plan for tests in humans. The next step is to restore hearing in a deaf mouse.

"Only after this can we start experiments that will teach us if the approach might work in humans. So there is an enormous amount of work to do.

"The exciting news for those of us with hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is that we now have hope of having our hearing restored someday."

He said that some deaf people will reject the offer of gene therapy. "If a person is born without hearing, they are "Deaf" and that is a unique culture into itself. Many Deaf individuals highly value their deafness and do not wish to be hearing.

"I was born hearing, and began to lose my hearing in grade school," he adds. The cause is unknown.

"My hearing loss is progressive, so I need to think about other options in the very near future."

Would he offer himself for the first experiments on patients? "I have never considered self-experimentation to treat my hearing loss. I hope to contribute to an effort that helps define suitable therapies, which may one day be offered in the clinic. That's the right way to go about this."

Normally, humans are born with about 12,000 hair cells in each ear and the death of the cells accounts for most types of acquired hearing loss.

Overall, the steady loss that accompanies the wear and tear of ageing produces significant hearing deterioration in about a third of the population by the age of 70.

I *heart* Skool Of Thought

Skool of Thought is by far my favorite DJ.  Always has been, always will be.  Always underrated, always under-appreciated, but ALWAYS a great set and always a great guy.

I've had the pleasure of bringing him to Toronto 3 times over the years.  Sadly, none of those parties were the massive blow-outs that they should have been, and for that reason I look forward to the day I can bring him back and give him the party he deserves to play at.  So I've made it my mission to rebuild the scene here for that very reason.

Here is a video from his recent trip to Shambala:

One day, Lloyd... I will show you a proper Toronto party...  one day...

New Release: DJ Mutiny - Sign of the Times

DJ Mutiny
A: 'Sign of the Times'
AA: 'Here I Come'
Label: iBreaks
Release Date: Oct/ Nov 2008
"At iBreaks, we've worked really hard over the last couple of years to build up a strong label with a reputation for quality and have been proud to feature such talented and respected producers as J-Mekka, Peter Paul, Deibeat, and The Rogue Element. We are now very honoured to be able to add DJ Mutiny to this list, as he fires out a release to satisfy all breakbeat lovers...

First up we have 'Sign of the Times' – A track which mixes up the 2 renowned styles of this producer, original bass line breaks with funky soulful vibes. We have to admit, this one's a bit different (dare we say 'epic'), with its haunting arpeggiated keys, whale-proportioned synth riff, hypnotic vocal, kick ass drums and not-had-a-bath-in-weeks dirty bass, all combined in a way that will kick ass on the dance floor or play easy in your stereo.

On the flip we have the chunkier, house-ier, trackier 'Here I Come', which has been tearing up the iBreaks radio shows for a few months now , this track illustrates the journey DJ Mutiny has taken us on with his 'Concrete Soul' series (SFF) and brings in heavy hypnotic bass riffs over soulful samples and melodies, a true head nodder of a tune which is just toooo smooth...    A killer release from the Original Don.. DJ Mutiny"
D-Monic's Pick:

New Release: Backdraft - Rock The Mic Ft. The Ragga Twins

Backdraft
A: Rock The Mic Ft. The Ragga Twins
AA: Pole Dancer
AAA: Rock The Mic Inst. (Bonus Tune)
Label: Passenger
Release Date: September 29th 2008

Taken from the forthcoming album 'We Know Where You Live!

The wait is nearly over. The original Labrat's have been in their lair for the last 12 months working hard on their song writing skills and developing their sound, ready for the release of their debut longplayer released in November on Passenger.

Paul and Karrie have been an integral part of the breakbeat scene for the past 6 years. Supported by everyone from Meat Katie to Rennie Pilgrim, FreQ Nasty to Tayo, this Stockport duo are one of Passengers most successful bands with a loyal and avid fanbase. Whether they are fusing ragga vocals with electro wobbles, reggae blessed grooves with syncopated beats or just having a laugh, trying to melt the globes bass cones… one thing is always obvious, they do it in style and with passion.

On the first single from their album they have teamed up with Passenger's own The Ragga Twins for what could well be one of their finest vocal outings to date! As with all of the Twins work, this has a catchy 'call and response' chorus and some straight up vocal anarchy that will twist around in your head long after you have returned from the club. The flipside is true Backdraft madness… doing the rounds on dubplate for the past few months, this tune has a proven track record of 'doin da biz'.

Ladies and gentleman, strap yourself in and get ready for the next 3 months of super dope, straight up cold lamping, head bopping beats that are fresher than a 4 finger gold ring rocked with iron flat fat laces.

It's a sick world, be apart of it!!!

D-Monic's Pick:

Backdraft - Pole Dancer

New Release: Atomic Hooligan 'Electro Ain't Electro'

Atomic Hooligan 'Electro Ain't Electro'
1. Rico Tubbs rmx
2. Original
3. Rico Tubbs RAVE rmx
Label: Botchit & Scarper
Release Date: Sept 1st 2008

3rd single taken from Atomic Hooligan's album 'Sex Drugs and Blah Blah Blah'

'Bold, brave and brash. This boasts more balls than Kevin Keegan's back yard– utterly essential'. IDJ Magazine (FRONT COVER)

Atomic Hooligan kick through the door once again at breakneck speed with another track lifted from their killer second album follow up 'Sex, Drugs and Blah Blah Blah...'

Breaking the genre boundaries once again Atomic Hooligan leave no stone unturned with the speaker busting 'Electro Aint Electro' slapping us silly with nasty glitched out acid tweaks and knees jerking bass!

A firm favourite from the Atomic Hooligan dj sets over the past year with many a folk anticipating the unleashing of the musical beastie...

Featuring the commanding electronically soaked vocals of Sim Wise, (Playboy -UK Cyber girl of the Year no less!) when she's says 'get your ass on the floor' you most certainly will!

On remix duties we've the ghetto house man of the moment Rico Tubbs, who has been busy getting people hot under collar with the bouncing bass led productions and genre spanning dj sets. Whipping the original in shape Rico has come up with a belting reworking.

We love to treat you at the house of Botchit & Scarper so as a bonus ball there will be a Beatport exclusive in the shape of a slamming 'Rave' mix from Rico Tubbs. Old skool style!

"The Hooligans have surpassed themselves again." - Carl Loben DJ Mag

What's Interesting To Me Today: Garfield minus Garfield

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb.

Myagi: 3 Years of Sunrise - Album Sampler #1

Artist: Myagi
Release: 3 Years of Sunrise - Album Sampler #1
  • a) Shapeshifter Pt 1 (Malente Remix)
  • aa) Shapeshifter Pt 2 (Rebel Sketchy Remix)
Label: Howlin' Records

"3 Years of Sunrise", due out this summer, is a cross-genre album that pulls influences from across the board, working as much as a chill out album as it does a collection of club bangers, and Shapeshifter (pt's 1 and 2), is one of the albums highlights.

A long standing "hands in the air" moment in Myagi's live set, the original Shapeshifters are a rocking blend of live bass, monster breaks, a minimal house groove and huge ravey synths, all in all providing ample material for some killer remixes...

These reworkings by faves Malente and Rebel Sketchy have been monsters on the dancefloor since they were submitted, we're sure you'll love em!

Shapeshifter Pt 1 - Malente Remix:
File this one under "extremely wrong electro madness"... Malente turns in a whopper of chunky, funky electro with very seriously twisted synth lines and a ball busting house groove. Sure to be a hit with fans of the cutting edge electro sound.

Shapeshifter Pt 2 - Rebel Sketchy Remix:
Rolling basslines, big breaks, high energy funk... this track has it all, and more... Payback Project stalwart Rebel Sketchy gives it up with a huge breakdown that throws people for a loop then puts it into overdrive... killer track!
